Thursday…..Almost There!

Good morning all!  A lot of stuff to get through this morning so let’s get right to it!

Personal training session today.  This will be #19 out of the 24 or 26 session package I bought (kind of sad that I don’t even know how many sessions I purchased) so the days of having a trainer kicking my ass twice a week are slowly coming to an end.  That means I have to start thinking about transitioning from being guided by a trainer to doing it on my own.  I like to think I’ve learned a lot from her but I’m worried about a) continuing to do circuits or sets that hit all the major muscle groups and b) keeping the intensity at a high level when there’s nobody there to keep me in check.  I think this will be a real test in keeping myself accountable to myself!

Cop Out

So, I had the best of intentions Wednesday for getting in the pool and doing a few hundred meters.  It just never happened (just like posting here never happened but that’s another story).  Motivation escaped me.  My excuse is that instead I spent my lunch shopping for my wife’s birthday gift that’s coming up in about a week and a half.  Marriage points are worth more than fitness points!

My sole workout Wednesday came at karate class.  We spent the better part of the class doing lunges with medicine balls and stance work so I can’t say this didn’t come without the physical demands of its own!  Yesterday was another session with the personal trainer (more lunges!) and karate in the evening.  Today, I finally made it back in the pool for that swim that I missed on Wednesday.  I’m glad I get at least the one obligatory swim in this week but I can tell that this is going to be the greatest challenge for me of the three triathlon events.

Hitting The Run

Happy Tuesday everyone and everybody knows (or should know) that Tuesdays are Lost days!  Can’t wait for tonight!

I posted my weekly weigh in results a little early this week (a little late getting around to posting) and was really excited with the results.  Had another solid workout with my trainer yesterday.  We started with an 8 minute spinning circuit followed by leg work (squats and kettlebell lunges), upper body (kettlebell rows and LOTS of push-ups) and abs (medicine ball crunches and the usual planks).  All that along with an evening of sparring at karate and you can probably understand why I slept pretty well last night.

Weigh-In Results – Week 10

Hey everyone!  Happy Monday which means back to the grind for most of us.  Many of you may or may not be hockey fans but, boy, what a game between the USA and Canada for the gold medal.  The whole tournament was really good and I’m proud that Olympic tournament MVP Ryan Miller was from my alma mater, Michigan State.  I’m going to miss the Olympics.

Monday morning means another weigh in for me.  After three straight weeks of coming in at 195.8, I was anxious to break out of the rut and start moving back in the right direction towards my target weight of 190.  I worked out judiciously and watched my diet like a hawk this week.  But did it pay off?

The Struggle

We’re halfway through the week and this week, thankfully, seems to be moving along a little better than the last one.

Yesterday’s workout was a relatively brief one.  I did a short two mile run on the treadmill followed by a little ab work and some stretching.  I find myself still protective of my knee so I opted not to push the distance this time around.  I want to make sure that the joint is sturdy and sound for the long term instead of trying to push the distance on a single run and risk further injury.

My knee continues to feel OK.  I’m trying to slowly build a good training base to get myself back up to full speed as opposed to just pushing it.  Knee issues seem to be something that will be an ongoing issue for me that will need constant revisiting.  I think working to limit the overexertion of the joints seems to be the correct path to take even if it means limiting the duration or intensity of my workouts.  I pushed it last year in training for the half marathon and my IT Band issues lingered for months.  I’d much rather run a slower pain-free race versus one that hurts for several miles.

A Return To Kobudo Without Our Leader

Welcome back to the work week everyone!  I had way too much going on Sunday and wasn’t able to stop by here to update so we’ll have to catch up on the entire weekend here today instead.

Saturday could probably best be described as surreal.  It was the first scheduled kobudo class since the passing of our instructor.  Sensei Harris practiced out of Green Bay and they opted to carry on with their normal schedule of classes there so our school followed suit and held kobudo class as scheduled.  He would have wanted it that way.  No doubt about it.

Understandably, this was not a normal class.  In fact, there was relatively little physical activity involved.  Just enough to break a bit of a sweat and review a few basics but that was it.  Not surprisingly, nobody was really into it and I think most who were there were there for the cameraderie with and support for each other.  Especially for the head instructor at our school who had become particularly close to Sensei Harris.

RIP Sensei Paul Harris

Those of you who have visited the blog here know that I speak occasionally of my practice of martial arts and, more specifically, the Japanese weapons art of kobudo.

I learned a short time ago that my kobudo instructor, Sensei Paul Harris, died in his sleep last night suddenly and unexpectedly.

He was a teacher, a mentor and a friend to a countless number of people.  Few people who practice martial arts in the state of Wisconsin hadn’t at least heard of him.  He had grown close to myself and many others at our karate school and his loss will be incalculable.  His commanding presence and respect for all those who shared his love will not soon be replaced.  I’m privileged to have had the opportunity to practice with him.

The kobudo program was one of his babies and his loss makes the future of the program as well as my personal attempt at achieving black belt later this year very much uncertain.  But that’s the least of our concerns right now.

Please keep the family in your thoughts as they navigate a very difficult step of the journey.
