Back For A Short While

Seeing as I’ve been gone from here for the last few weeks, I imagine I owe everyone who has continued to visit here an explanation.

Short answer – my schedule got too full and something had to give.  Not the best answer I suppose but it is the truth.  I’ve had a lot going on at work lately that’s required a lot of my time and by the time I get home at night I just want to take it easy and hang out with my wife and daughter.  No offense to anyone reading this but they’ll always come first.

I’d like to think that things will slow down here over the summer but I get the sense that this won’t be the case.  A lot of initiatives going on at work and our second daughter will make her debut just eight short weeks from now.  My guess is that I’ll only be updating sporadically for the near future.  For that, I apologize.  I really wish I could be on here more frequently as I really enjoy the community of people but sometimes priorities and responsibilities spin you in a different direction.

With that being said, I did want to give you all an update on what’s been going on from a fitness and training perspective since I last jumped on and, fortunately, a lot of it is good news.

The Struggle

We’re halfway through the week and this week, thankfully, seems to be moving along a little better than the last one.

Yesterday’s workout was a relatively brief one.  I did a short two mile run on the treadmill followed by a little ab work and some stretching.  I find myself still protective of my knee so I opted not to push the distance this time around.  I want to make sure that the joint is sturdy and sound for the long term instead of trying to push the distance on a single run and risk further injury.

My knee continues to feel OK.  I’m trying to slowly build a good training base to get myself back up to full speed as opposed to just pushing it.  Knee issues seem to be something that will be an ongoing issue for me that will need constant revisiting.  I think working to limit the overexertion of the joints seems to be the correct path to take even if it means limiting the duration or intensity of my workouts.  I pushed it last year in training for the half marathon and my IT Band issues lingered for months.  I’d much rather run a slower pain-free race versus one that hurts for several miles.

A Return To Kobudo Without Our Leader

Welcome back to the work week everyone!  I had way too much going on Sunday and wasn’t able to stop by here to update so we’ll have to catch up on the entire weekend here today instead.

Saturday could probably best be described as surreal.  It was the first scheduled kobudo class since the passing of our instructor.  Sensei Harris practiced out of Green Bay and they opted to carry on with their normal schedule of classes there so our school followed suit and held kobudo class as scheduled.  He would have wanted it that way.  No doubt about it.

Understandably, this was not a normal class.  In fact, there was relatively little physical activity involved.  Just enough to break a bit of a sweat and review a few basics but that was it.  Not surprisingly, nobody was really into it and I think most who were there were there for the cameraderie with and support for each other.  Especially for the head instructor at our school who had become particularly close to Sensei Harris.

RIP Sensei Paul Harris

Those of you who have visited the blog here know that I speak occasionally of my practice of martial arts and, more specifically, the Japanese weapons art of kobudo.

I learned a short time ago that my kobudo instructor, Sensei Paul Harris, died in his sleep last night suddenly and unexpectedly.

He was a teacher, a mentor and a friend to a countless number of people.  Few people who practice martial arts in the state of Wisconsin hadn’t at least heard of him.  He had grown close to myself and many others at our karate school and his loss will be incalculable.  His commanding presence and respect for all those who shared his love will not soon be replaced.  I’m privileged to have had the opportunity to practice with him.

The kobudo program was one of his babies and his loss makes the future of the program as well as my personal attempt at achieving black belt later this year very much uncertain.  But that’s the least of our concerns right now.

Please keep the family in your thoughts as they navigate a very difficult step of the journey.

Sick Day

So it turns out that pushing myself yesterday was not a good idea.  After starting the day not feeling great to begin with, my session with the personal trainer made me feel even worse.  She went a little lighter on me than usual but it was still enough to drain almost all of my energy and leave me feeling pretty weak.  If that wasn’t enough, my decision to go do karate after that was the proverbial nail in the coffin.  I felt bad enough last night that I ended up calling in sick to work today.

I think I’ll take this as a sign that I should take it easy for a day or two.  I’ve been trying to continue like normal with this chest cold for most of the week and I think the main result of this has been that I haven’t been able to work out as intensely as normal yet I also haven’t been able to get back to being 100% again.  I think I’ll better serve myself and my family by taking a little time to getting healthy again and then we can push forward again.

Tough Day Ahead…

Good morning everyone,

I’m feeling a little under the weather this morning and this is probably the workout day where I can least afford to not be feeling my best.  This afternoon is my normal session with the personal trainer and this evening is a 75 minute kobudo class followed by a 60 minute sparring class.  Today is probably the most physically intense day of the month for me.

Even though I’m not feeling 100% today, I’m committed to making it through each one of these workouts today even if it’s not at full intensity.  Plus, as a bonus I’ve decided to reward myself tonight when I get home around 8:30 and all the workouts are said and done.  I’m going to have an apple with peanut butter!  I haven’t had one of these in a little while and almost forgot how much I enjoyed them so tonight my reward for making it through the day will be a granny smith apple with peanut butter!
